A residential automatic opener must have an automatic reverse safety device, and since 1993 it must need an edge sensor, an optical sensor or a similar device to operate, so that a closing door opens and an open door will not close when the device is triggered (Health and Safety Code 19890). For these state rules, a garage door is an overhead, vertical moving door at the car entrance of a garage at a home with one to four units. Doors that slide sideways are not covered. (source: California Legislature)

Anyone who installs, services or repairs a residential opener must follow the maker's installation, operation, maintenance and testing instructions. (source: California Legislature)

Anyone hired to service or repair a residential opener must test whether it reverses on contact with a rigid two inch high object under the door. If it fails, they must fill out and attach a red warning certificate to the opener. (source: California Legislature)

A replacement garage door may not be connected to an existing opener that fails that test. Breaking the instruction or replacement door rules carries a civil penalty of $500 per opener; breaking the reverse or sensor rules carries $1,000 per opener (Health and Safety Code 19891).
